Friends of West Indian Children Corporation (FOWIC)
About Us
Friends of West Indian Children offers culturally-based arts education activities in conjunction with local and international partners, to children living throughout the West Indian islands, with a focus on the islands of the Lesser Antilles. Friends of West Indian Children is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Vision
A world where all children have a safe space to express their thoughts, opinions and ideas through art, without fear of censure or judgment.
Mission
To improve lives by encouraging West Indian children to value the arts as a means for communication, self-expression and cultural preservation.
How the Program Got Started
Friends of West Indian Children (FOWIC) was founded by Cheryl LaTouche, a creative girl who was born on the island of Grenada in the West Indies. Growing up Cheryl was an avid reader and film lover, but there were very few age appropriate books and films available to her. Cheryl migrated to the United States and begun gathering books and films to ship back home to Grenada so other children could have books and films. After storing books and films in her basement and in the basements and spare rooms of her friends, FoWIC was born. It is a way for Cheryl, her friends and many others to help bring books, arts, and education to children in the West Indies.
